Safety Considerations When Canoeing

Prior to getting into a canoe, one should remember to always put safety first. Since the situation in the water can be very unpredictable, it is wise to use caution and be prepared for the unexpected. That way, emergencies can be better handled and may possibly even result in saving a life.

One way to increase the safety of your canoeing adventure is to go out with a group which includes some who are experienced canoeists. Of course, any time that on is around water, it is a good idea to practice the buddy system. But if canoeing involves swift moving water and rapids as well as a high chance of injury, it is always wise to have plenty of people around for rescue.

When going in a group, there should be people who know basic first aid so they would be prepared for what might unexpectedly happen. There should be some medical sites nearby as well in order to take care of the situation if ever it gets uncontrollable and unmanageable. Moreover, before canoeing, people must check the weather conditions and avoid heading into the open sea during a tropical storm or hurricane. It is not a good idea to go out on the water in poor weather conditions due to poor visibility and the danger of lightning. In addition to that, all members of the group should discuss all possible things that they may encounter, as well as the best way to deal with what comes up. That way, if anything does happen, everyone will know what to do and be able to take action faster.

In addition, it is a good idea to inform authorities that your group will be canoeing, especially if you will be out in the wilderness areas. If you can't resist the urge to go canoeing alone, at the very least, you should inform your family and friends of your location.

Most importantly, stay away from water where the current is extremely strong for this may turn the canoe upside down with the person in it in a blink of an eye. Canoeing in such conditions is for trained experienced canoeists only that have the proper precautions in place. Lastly, everyone should wear life jackets all the time for these can save lives.

Canoeing is a fun sport for those of all ages and abilities. Keep it fun by following the proper safety precautions. The unexpected can happen at any time when dealing with nature, so it is wise to be prepared so you can stay safe.
